Level 2 Gym Instructor Qualification – What It’s Really Like to Take the Course
Why I’m Getting Qualified
Firstly, why did I decide the Level 2 Gym Instructor Qualification was the right path for me?
I’ve always been the sort of person who just loves helping people. It comes naturally to me — but for years, I didn’t quite know how I wanted to help.
I’ve tried so many things: training as a counsellor (too intense for me), becoming a manifestation coach (a bit too woo-woo!), even working as an artist to draw people together with lost loved ones (beautiful, but it didn’t work out). Eventually, I just stopped trying.
For a while, I felt like I had no purpose. But then in 2024, when I started my fitness journey, everything changed. That journey eventually led me to the Level 2 Gym Instructor Qualification, which felt like the perfect next step.
I found a passion for helping people get healthy — and it suddenly felt like everything I’d “failed” at came together.
Art (our bodies are art — let’s be real), wellness (if you’re a gym rat, you know!), mindset, manifestation, health, happiness… it all clicked.
That’s when I started my Instagram page @strengthandspice_. I wanted to share everything I’d learned so far and help others feel their best too.
Right now, I can only offer general advice – but I want to do more. I want to help people change their lives, get stronger, and become the version of themselves they’ve dreamed of becoming.
That’s why I decided to take the Level 2 Gym Instructor Qualification.
Who Am I Studying With?
I decided to choose Origym as my course provider for my Level 2 Gym Instructor Qualification as after researching a lot of different options, they appeared to be the best option.
They offer a wide variety of packages and they also had a really good deal on at the time. I also love that with them I can study in my own time, they have both online and in person options, plus you get really good support from them even if you are an online student.
They are also the UK’s No’1 training provider for the Level 2 Gym Instructor Qualification (and other qualifications!) so it made sense!
What Level 2 Involves (and How I’m Finding It)
So, what exactly does a Level 2 Gym Instructor qualification involve?
To be honest, I didn’t research it much before signing up, I just knew I wanted to get qualified and started comparing different course providers. But now that I’m in it, I can say it covers a lot more than I expected (in a good way!).
I’ve only completed the first few modules so far, but the course already covers a wide range of topics—from joints and the effects of exercise on the body to the vertebrate, connective tissues, and even nutrition (macros and micronutrients are my absolute fave topic!).
One thing that’s made this part even more fun? Trying out new protein products. I’ve been loving The Protein Works whey lately — especially their millionaires shortbread one. It blends so smoothly and works perfectly for shakes or smoothies!
If you’re looking for a good-quality protein powder, you can check out their full range here. p.s – you can also use code HANNAHC for 10% off! [aff]
Looking ahead, the Level 2 Gym Qualification also includes:
- The circulatory and respiratory systems
- How to structure warm-ups and cool-downs
- Creating safe and effective gym environments
- Resistance training principles
- Preparing yourself and clients for gym-based workouts
- Adapting exercises to suit individual needs or limitations
- Designing effective workout programmes
There’s a strong focus on safety too, which I really appreciate. It covers safeguarding, working with special populations, monitoring exercise intensity, and how to collect and manage client information professionally.
There’s also a business side – really useful for when you actually start working with clients.
At the end of the Level 2 Gym Instructor Qualification course, there are two main exams: one on Anatomy and Physiology, and another on the Principles of Exercise, Fitness, and Health. You also need to pass an in-person assessment, which I know can feel scary (it definitely does to me!). But I think it’s one of those things you just have to push through. You’ve done the learning, and you do know your stuff – so you’ve got this.
So far, I’ve genuinely loved learning everything. I have a passion for helping people, so it’s been really fulfilling to study something I know I’ll be able to use in the future to support others. And as an avid gym girl, I’m already applying what I’m learning to my own training too, which is a big bonus.
There are definitely moments where I think, “Oh god, is this too much for me?” But usually, when I come back to it the next day, it makes more sense. So my one bit of advice? Don’t overdo it. Take your time, and trust that it will click.
My Honest Thoughts So Far
I’m only partway through the Level 2 Gym Instructor Qualification, but I wanted to share how it’s really feeling right now – the highs, the challenges, and everything in between.
It’s definitely pushing me out of my comfort zone, but in a good way. Some days I’m buzzing with motivation and feel like I’m really getting it. Other days, I struggle to keep up or feel overwhelmed by all the info.
It’s mostly overwhelming because I’m juggling so much: a full-time job, a degree, content creation, and everything in between (plus actually finding time for the gym itself – which, let’s be real, is kind of the whole point!). But even with the chaos, it’s been a genuinely rewarding experience. It’s already changing how I see fitness – and how I see myself.
The most surprising part so far? The sheer number of topics the Level 2 Gym Instructor Course actually covers! I don’t know why, but when I started, I thought, “What more can I really learn?” Turns out… quite a lot.
Right now, I’m learning about macros and micronutrients. I already know a fair bit from my own fitness journey, but I’m excited to study it properly and get it nailed in an official capacity. There’s something about being qualified that gives you that extra confidence boost, like you can finally say, “Yes, I do know what I’m talking about,” instead of second-guessing yourself. Hopefully it’ll help with that little imposter syndrome voice, too.
Honestly, the hardest part is often just getting started. Some days I really have to force myself to open the laptop – especially when I’m in a house with my boyfriend, who’s either watching TV or (more likely) cleaning – he’s always cleaning, bless him. But once I sit down and get into it, I don’t want to stop. I really, really love it.
What I Would Tell Anyone Thinking About It
If you’re considering doing the Level 2 Gym Instructor Qualification, I’d honestly say go for it. But, with a little bit of realism too.
First of all, don’t wait around for the “perfect time” or for everything in your life to feel settled. I definitely didn’t feel 100% ready when I signed up. I just knew I wanted to help people and that this was the next right step in my journey. If you’re passionate about fitness and love the idea of supporting others, then you’re already halfway there.
That said, you do need to be mindful of your time. I won’t sugar-coat it, trying to juggle this course alongside a full-time job, a degree, content creation, and, you know, life (!) has been tough. But it’s doable. I’ve found that taking things slow and steady works best for me. Some weeks I’ll fly through a section, other times I need a break, and that’s okay.
What surprised me most about the Level 2 Gym Instructor Qualification is how in-depth it is. I think I imagined it would just be about basic exercises and how to use gym equipment. But there’s so much more to it – anatomy, nutrition, planning safe and effective workouts, understanding clients’ needs, it’s genuinely been eye-opening. It’s not just about passing an exam, it’s about becoming someone who can truly help others thrive.
And just to be clear – you absolutely don’t need to be the fittest, strongest, or leanest person in the room to do this course. That was a fear of mine at the beginning. But what matters more is that you care, that you’re willing to learn, and that you want to support others on their journey.
So if you’re thinking about signing up for the Level 2 Gym Instructor Qualification, this is your sign. It’s challenging, yes, but also exciting and incredibly rewarding. If I can do it, juggling everything else in my life, then you absolutely can too.
What’s Next For Me
Right now, I’m focusing on completing my Level 2 Gym Instructor Qualification, but this is only the beginning for me. Once I’ve passed (hopefully within the next couple months!) The plan is to move straight into the Level 3 Personal Training qualification, which will allow me to work with clients one-to-one and create personalised training programmes. The thought of doing that makes me so excited!!
After that? I’ve got my eyes on the Level 4 Nutrition course. Nutrition has always been one of my biggest passions, and I’m so excited to deepen my knowledge and feel even more confident when sharing advice. I want to be in a position where I can fully support someone’s journey – not just with workouts, but with the mindset, motivation, and food side of things too.
The Level 2 Gym Instructor Qualification has already shown me how much I love learning about the body and how it all works. I honestly can’t wait to keep going and turn all of this into a real career.
Helping people feel stronger, healthier, and happier? That’s the dream.
